My SANBS Journey

The opportunity to move from one position to another within a short period of time and the subsequent promotional prospects, has allowed me to grow personally and within my career

MY FIRST PERMANENT EMPLOYMENT

It has been almost 15 years since I joined SANBS in March 2008, occupying a Trainee Technician position in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) department.

It was really an exciting moment since it was my first permanent employment, coming from an intern position at my previous company of employment.

Equal opportunities

Having to work in a “Technical team within ICT” where my colleagues were predominantly male, was both interesting and intimidating. My expectations were that both physical and emotional factors of gender differences would be a challenge, considering that I was the only woman in a male dominated team and we all came from different backgrounds. It was a diverse team indeed. The one comfort I had was that our manager was a woman. All went well from day one and with time I realised that my assumptions and expectations were unfounded. I was treated as an equal and this inspired me to work even harder. I also now see women and young people occupying management positions which was not something common in the past.

SANBS is a great company to work for

I have never looked back and I can still say that SANBS is a great company to work for. I was encouraged by my male colleagues to obtain my driver’s license so that I could be independent and travel to sites without having to rely on them.

A rewarding journey

I worked for three years as a Trainee Technician and was promoted in May 2011 to a Support Technician role. I then decided to study SAP – Materials Management in 2012 funded by SANBS which I completed successfully. In 2016 I was appointed as a SAP Support Analyst within the ERP team.

In 2021 I was promoted to the position of a SAP Procurement Analyst which I still hold. It has been a rewarding journey for me and for SANBS.

Working in the ICT department at SANBS has been an eye-opener, both exciting and challenging. Numerous projects have been implemented, such as – Software upgrades, Technical upgrades, Network upgrades, the Donor mobile project, e-procurement modules implementation, BW reports implementation, Plant enablement and many more.

A purposeful journey

All my roles at SANBS allowed me to interact with everyone in the company, which made my journey seamless. It allowed me to learn from people’s behaviour, how diverse we are and still respect each other. My communication skills improved, I gained a lot of confidence, and my perception about different races changed. The fact that the company’s main focus is to save people’s lives is fulfilling as I know that the work I do is important. The experience still amazes me every day! At the time of joining SANBS, I only knew that they dealt with blood donation but I soon discovered that SANBS does much more than merely drawing blood from Donors, including all the processes involved in blood processing. It was exciting to visit all the laboratories to see how blood and other blood products are processed.

Development opportunities

My career highlight was receiving the opportunity to study further without restrictions and which was funded by SANBS. The opportunity to move from one position to another within a short period of time and the subsequent promotional prospects, has allowed me to grow personally and within my career. I had many opportunities to travel to different SANBS branches and form part of a major successful project implementation.

Overcoming challenges

The biggest challenge is when we don’t have enough blood donations to meet the demand and we therefore have to find innovative ways to increase blood collection by running more marketing campaigns to attract additional donors. Retaining young and talented employees also remains an ongoing challenge within SANBS especially at management level.

Embracing technology and innovation

There have been numerous improvements since I joined SANBS. Technology has significantly advanced and mobile computers are now being used by mobile clinics. We also have software and technologies that allow us to assist users remotely. Online systems have been implemented in different departments to move away from manual paper-based systems. SANBS is moving with the world, we are adopting and adapting to world standards and trends which has simplified our processes. ICT is running on newer versions of hardware and software which improves online security for SANBS as a whole. Now we are able to work from home due to the technology and capabilities that SANBS has implemented.

I look forward to the next chapter in my career and being part of a company that cares for its people and the communities it serves, fulfilling our purpose of being “Trusted to Save Lives”.
