My SANBS Journey

...having joined SANBS at the tender age of 18… and as I reflect upon my many years at SANBS, I believe that the main contributing factor that has shaped this this organisation into a world class institution is the resilience and passion of its people.

I have worked in many teams across several laboratories in SANBS and I have seen my colleagues ever willing to roll up their sleeves, and going beyond the call of duty.

fIRST IMPRESSIONS

I joined SANBS in 1992 at the tender age of 18. The idea of working in a medical laboratory was a dream come true. I must, however admit that I did not even know that there was such a place called a Blood Bank until I joined SANBS; at that time the Natal Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS). My early experiences were exiting and intimidating at the same time.

It was my first exposure to cultural diversity and the world of transfusion testing. Exposure to both was life-changing, or should I say a huge character building experience.

There was so much to learn and it felt great to be part of the business of saving lives. It immediately became my home and my passion.

The resilience of SANBS employees

As I reflect upon my many years at SANBS, I believe that the main contributing factor that has shaped this this organisation into a world class institution is the resilience and passion of its people.

I have worked in many teams across several laboratories in SANBS and I have seen my colleagues ever willing to roll up their sleeves, and going beyond the call of duty.

Even during times of major change and uncertainty, such as the merger of regional blood services and implementation of new policies, technologies and practices the SANBS teams, although weighed down at times, have persevered and come out strong each time.

The agility, adaptability and loyalty of our people is incredible. When I look at my current team and others I have worked with; the absolute winning feature that emerges for me is the sense of belonging we have.

Development
opportunities

My journey at SANBS has been a true developmental experience. I joined the organisation as a high school graduate with no tertiary qualifications. I studied medical technology part-time which was funded by SANBS. I later completed my Master’s Degree, again part-time at Stellenbosch University and I am currently a PHD student at the University of Cape Town which is also being supported by SANBS and funded by the United States Fogarty Grant Fund for HIV research. The knowledge and skills I have acquired at SANBS has allowed me to contribute to scientific and academic collaborations both nationally and internationally.

Continuous innovation
& growth

Over the years, despite challenges, SANBS has grown as a healthcare and scientific institution through research, innovation, collaboration and leadership. We have managed to expand our blood donor base, maintain better blood stocks, improve our blood collection and testing technologies and implement digital teaching and learning platforms; all directed at improving care and safety of our donors, patients and staff. SANBS today, is by far a different organisation from when I joined years ago. Although it has evolved considerably, with enhanced sophistication, a wide footprint across the country and internationally connected, it fiercely subscribes to its long standing primary purpose # Trusted to save lives.

I am proud to be part of the SANBS family, it is a place I belong, and I am committed to give back to SANBS in gratitude for their investment in me.
